Shiv Linga


Shiv Linga is considered to be the holy embodiment of Lord Shiva, which almost all the Hindu devotees dedicatedly adorn and worship. The convention of Shiv Ling’s worship is believed to have originated from the Indus Valley Civilization.

Over the years, many interpretations have been given to explain the true meaning of Shiv Linga.Bansi Pansit’s illustrious book, ‘Hindu Dharma’ concludes that three gods actually reside in the entire stone formation of a Shiv Linga. The god Brahma occupies the base layer that touches the ground; the central position belongs to Lord Vishnu while the uppermost position is reserved for Lord Shiva.

Moreover, according to Hindu religious mythology, it was the unceasing worship of Shiv Linga, which gifted Ravana with tremendous powers. Also, in the renowned epic ‘Mahabharata’, the invocation of the holy Shiv Linga assisted Arjuna in attaining Pashupathastra. Apart from the famous mythological tales, there exists a very enlightening interpretation given by Swami Dharmananda.



He considers Shiv Linga as the source, which assists in amelioration of every individual’s ability to focus on one particular point. According to him, the divine Shiv Linga has the attribute of following a single perspective, which has been observed over the years by a number of priests, engrossed in the worship of Lord Shiva.

And supporting varied interpretations related to the unlimited power of Shiv Linga is the indigenously natural phenomenon, which gives birth to an astounding Shiv Linga at Amarnath. And because of that astonishing natural Shiv Linga, Amarnath is considered to be an extremely spiritual place, in the midst of beautiful Himalayas.

People from distant places come over to climb up the high mountains, only to have a glimpse of the startling ice Shiv Linga. And apart from the Amarnath Shiv Linga, there also exists man-made Shiv Linga’s in the Hampi region of India. And the interesting fact about them is that they amaze you because of their whopping count of 1008. So, make it a point to visit all such amazing Shiv Ling’s and pay homage to them with all your heart.
